A Disability Confident Leader

As a Disability Confident Leader since 2018, the Council is proud to demonstrate the support and commitment it provides to recruiting, retaining and developing disabled people.

There are three levels to the Disability Confident standard : Committed, Employer and Leader.  As a Leader, the Council acts as disability champion

with the local community and businesses to share good practice.

The Council's Disability Staff Network, and recently created Neurodiversity Network, both provide a voice to those who have a disability, or support others with a disability. The membership of these groups also ensure that awareness and understanding of the issues facing disabled people, is shared at all levels of the organisation.

Last week, Council staff and their colleagues from the Department for Work and Pensions talked to local businesses about what it had been like to go through the process of becoming a Disability Confident Leader. Discussions highlighted the importance of understanding that the process is a journey, which may include setbacks, but which must prioritise listening to the views and experiences of disabled people.
